This week we bring back Lenny “the King of Swan Island” Anderson to tell us about the days of touring without all the fancy gadgets you kids have these days. The last time we talked with Lenny we didn’t get any of his touring stories. He did not disappoint this time. Though he was not impressed with my choice of beverage.
Also with us is Dan B. who comes to PDX from the Volunteer State. Dan will be starting a podcast on sustainability with his siblings and wanted to see what podcasting Sprocket-style looks like. God luck, Dan!
Oh, and Lisa’s back! She has a funny anecdote that turns into a plug for Gladys Bikes (take a drink Krista S).
MailWe got physical mail From Mark in San Jose!
We got Voicemail from Tim Mooney

OMG you got the intro perfect??? Â What happened? Â Wow I’m totally impressed. Â You should go get a lottery ticket. Â This never happens. Â I know what it is the sky is falling right and hell froze over, Yikes!
I hate clowns too! Â I am not afraid of them, I just don’t like them. Â Maybe because you can hide a lot of evil behind all that makeup.
I wish someone would serve breakfast on my commute. Â That would be awesome. Â There is rarely any other cyclist on my commute. Â Most people on bicycles are either pedestrians riding the wrong way in the back lane or commuting or traveling in the opposite direction than I am. Â If I see 10 bicycles during my commute in a week I am seeing a lot. Â If I still worked downtown I may see more but for the most part I don’t see that many cyclist to justify breakfast along my commute. Â Anyway I loved the episode and yeah I think she would be a great guest co-host for you Aaron.

I only took two pictures! But here they are. No. 2 is a sunRISE, even though it looks like a sunset.
Also, Washington state parks did hiker/biker for us at $12, which was good because the campground was otherwise full. Had us plop down anywhere in the day use area kind of like our experience at battle ground lake! We ended up in the shade next to a YoungLife camp

How Cyclists on Fixies Saved California’s Mail Service 120 Years AgoOver a century ago, a major rail strike in Chicago cut train activity—including mail service—from Illinois straight to the Pacific coast. In order to maintain California’s consistent postal deliveries, a group of bicyclists teamed up to complete a 210-mile relay from the state’s central valley up to San Francisco—on fixies, over unpaved dirt roads. This month [July] marks the 120th anniversary of the route.
On the suggestion of his grocer, [A.C.]Banta [of Fresno,CA] saw an opportunity to connect California’s central valley with the San Francisco Bay Area. Totaling 210 miles, divided into eight relays, and occupying 18 hours the route offered to carry a letter via bicycle from one end to the other for $0.25. While that was ten times the price of standard mail, isolation and desperation closed the price gap. There was simply no alternative, and “the only delay was an occasional punctured tire.”
